Engineering the response to destructive drilling dynamics.

Vibration management, engineered into the drill bit.

The Evolution Drill Bit is designed around a source-control principle: integrate controlled mechanical damping into the drill bit at the cutting face. By allowing controlled relative movement and recovery within the bit, the technology is intended to absorb, isolate or attenuate a portion of damaging torsional energy before it travels farther through the drill string and wider drilling system.

01 — THE DRILLING CHALLENGE

Damage can begin at a frequency the surface never sees.

High Frequency Torsional Oscillation, commonly referred to as HFTO, is a high-speed torsional drilling dysfunction associated with rapid interaction between the cutting structure and formation. It may be difficult to identify using conventional surface measurements. Together with stick/slip, cutter-impact damage and repeated bit-impact events, these dynamic loads can repeatedly load and unload the cutting structure, affecting drilling efficiency, cutter condition and the durability of the wider drilling system.

For operators, the consequence is not simply vibration. Where PDC cutters are used, damaging dynamic loads may contribute to chipping, spalling, delamination or premature cutter failure. Wider consequences may include drill-string damage, top-drive damage, component wear, reduced consistency, unplanned trips and a higher cost per drilled metre.
